Processes of Life/Painting IRL

Shinji Toya
Digital prints face mounted on acrylic
This work is developed from Toya’s ongoing project that looks at the metaphor of a living painting. The images are the record of processes of an automatic collaging programme based on a life-imitating algorithm called Game of Life. Every time the programme is (re)activated the image is perturbed and changes colour and texture in complex ways – like changes in an ecosystem. The project is inspired by Paul Klee’s idea of abstract painting that is the abstraction of rules of natural formation and growth. The project reconsiders the relation between life and painting in a contemporary technological way.
